Everyone keeps going on and on about how Americans are "getting fatter." Yet the fashion industry just doesn't seem to be keeping up on this. Especially in dressy type clothing.
I've got tickets for Barry Manilow in May and while I could just wear what I wore to past concerts, mom's hung up on the idea of all new outfits. So I've been looking and searching - and find nothing. Absolutely not one single nice blouse or pants suit. (Dresses are out. They require heels and I can't walk in them.) At least not for women who are both fat and short. (I refuse to use terms like "curvy", "goddess sized", and all those PC terms - I AM FAT. Period. I'm NOT a goddess or curvy. I'm just fat.)
There's plenty for really tall women who are also fat. Roaman's for instance - apparently their idea of a "petite" is a woman 5' 6" or taller because their "petite-plus" clothing is really long. My mom ordered a pair of slacks from them - she's 4' 11 & 3/4ths" - the crotch came to her knees - and that was the petite! At 5' 3" myself their clothing dragged a good six inches on the floor.
And so much of the stuff is still done in a way that just doesn't flatter. It's still sleeveless/capped sleeves/spagetti straps - and even skinny girls look bad in this stuff. (And why do so many think that just because it doesn't have sleeves that their shouldn't wear anti-persepant? BO is NOT beautiful, ladies, it's GROSS! I don't want to smell your armpits from 3 feet away. Go buy a can of Arrid XX-Dry PLEASE!)) I don't like my big arms exposed. I can't even wear sleeveless nightgowns. I have to have at least 3/4-sleeves. Then there's the stuff that's cut to expose the gut roll. WHY?!?!?! Why do they keep making blouses and shirts so short? I saw this big article online about some designer they were praising because she "made clothes that flatter the lsuh curvy woman." Well, those women looked HORRID. The dresses were sleeveless and they had these big fat flabby arms exposed. The dresses clung to fat rolls. I felt embarassed of my own ugly body just looking at them. I'd hate to have to wear one of those outfits without a paperbag over my head - without eyeholes so I wouldn't have to see people point and laugh.
I want to tell fashion designers to wake up. That fat and short women need dressy clothing too. That it can't all be tops that look like they were made for men. Nor just larger versions of skinny girl clothes. It needs to be romantic, special, flattering the right parts like the breasts, hiding the gross parts like the belly and the arms.
Oh, and do not suggest Layne Bryant AKA Woman Within. Their clothes are the fugliest pieces of crap I've ever seen. They all look like they're made for fat men, not women. I've even looked in their online catalogue and they don't have a single nice thing.
