D I am 17. I'm what you can consider to be a 'horror wh***', indulging myself in all things horror, to please my sick obsessions with fear. I work at a local haunted house, go to horror film festivals, participate in many horror genre interest forums, read books of the horror genre, watch horror movies, and analyze the movies and books that I've seen with my fellow friends that are interested in horror as well. Needless to say, I have some considerable experience and have seen a lot, even though I am fairly young. Many a horror movie I've seen where a group of people, young most often, stumble upon an odd family residing in a secluded and equally odd house in an isolated area, frequently in the west, in order to seek help or shelter. The plot continues as more and more creepy behavior of the family is revealed to the terrified young campers, adventurers, or partiers. Usually, amongst the group of visitors, one is ignorant of any threat while another, most of the time a girl, is skeptical and stubborn and insists that the family mustn't be trusted and that they must leave as soon as possible. Then, for whatever reason, the family begins to kill, or assists in the killing, of the visitors, one by one. It all ends with a few members of the family being wounded or killed, most of the visitors being killed, with one or two visitors left, though some of the time writers like to kill them off in the few seconds before the credits. The threat is usually something of an urban legend, something that one wouldn't believe at first, and that would easily be kept hidden in secrecy, off so far in the woods or in the desert. This can include a murderer in the family, upholding some sick tradition, cult-like or not, like Leatherface, or something more supernatural or creature, like the mutants of The Hills Have Eyes. Reasons for the murders may be merely out of pleasure or for self-sustainability, like a cannibalistic family with little other source for food.If you didn't already pick up on what I'm trying to get at, my point is that the short film featured in the first episode was extremely and pathetically unoriginal. I am saddened to know that the writers of this film were able to sell their idea and receive a budget to make their movie. I laughed out loud at every cliche in the movie, which came in great number. Every second of every scene in this film could be directly traced to at least one other horror movie, or in many instances, more. I starting to almost feel like I'm seeing the same movie over and over again each year, but with different locations and actors.Though perfection was not to be expected, I still thought better of these so-called 'big name' directors, knowing the budget and the large-network deal that they have been given. I was severly disappointed and hope that Fear Itself will have more to offer next week. If not, the show's producers will not be signing contracts for next year's season and the directors of the made-for-TV films will have to carry the shame on their resumes. My rating: The Sacrifice
