Growing up geek

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007, 11:39 am

Now a days being a "geek" has become more of a fashion trend than the stigma it once was. Wearing button down shirts, glasses, and sweaters has become a popular clothing style so much so that actors in Hollywood have dressed this way for premieres, photoshoots, and the MTV movie awards. When I walk into my local Anchor Blue and see the almost the same outfit my mom tried to force me to wear for my junior high yearbook photo something has changed. Now don't get me wrong I am glad that "geek chic" has made it wear more kids can fit in I feel that people don't understand what it was like to grow up a geek before being a geek was cool.

I will take you through a scenario in the day of a life of an original geek.

1. Wake up

2. Put on untrendy clothes

3. Walk to bus stop (avoiding known spots where you know the bullies will beat you up)

4. While waiting for bus get made fun of and pushed around by said bullies

5. Sit by yourself on front of bus (allowing a quick escape when bus gets to school)

6. Go to library or computer lab (this helps two-fold: no one can beat you up in there, plus your friends are usually there)

7. Go to class (avoid known bully spots)

8. Repeat step 7 till lunch

9. eat lunch (keeping eye out for bullies since they are now going everywhere)

10. If no bullies find you continue to step 12. If not go to 11

11. Get pushed around, made fun of, punched, depending on their mood- trashcanned

12. Go to library or computer lab

13. Repeat step 7 till end of school

14. Get on bus

15. Repeat step 5

16. Try to get home as fast as you can (run if nessecary)

17. If caught by bullies continue to

18. After another thrashing head home

19. Get home and do homework

20. Watch TV or play videogames

21. Go to bed

The greatness of Chuck

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007, 10:12 am

NBC's new hit show Chuck has been climbing in the ratings since it premiere in late september. This weeks episode brought in it's highest rating yet, going so far as to top the replay ratings for on Saturday. Why is this you may ask? Because Chuck is one of the greatest shows ever put on television.

Now I may be biased considering I am also a nerd (I prefer the term geek but whatever) at heart. But I do think others who aren't "nerds" also agree. The show has a great mixtue of comedy, action, and drama behind it. An awesome cast: Zachary Levi and Joshua Gomez are the next Laurel and Hardy (just not as slapsticky), wonderful writing (sure they are a few wrong facts but they are very minimal), and an overall great look. The show also has great pop culture references scattered throughout every episode.

I will end this with just one question: Why hasn't NBC announced this show as permanent fixture yet?

Suspending disbelief?!?!?!

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007, 12:49 pm

A trend I have noticed in reading reviews of both movies and shows is this apparent need to say "Your gonna have to suspend disbelief with this one". This has become more and more common due to the reality show craze of the past three years, plus with the invention everyone can post their opinion about anything on the web for all to see (much like I am doing now). The use of this phrase makes me annoyed because technically that is what serialized televison and movies are supposed to do; remove you from your current element and take you into a fictional world where anything is possible. If it wasn't then people should believe that all of the heroes from Heroes really are saving NY, and that there is a woman who got highly advanced technology implanted in her and is now a tool for the military, plus we really need to tell those housewives to get counseling. Suspending disbelief is what most of these movie/tv creators are looking to do, they want you to believe that you are in a new place, even if it is only for an hour or two. Most shows are predicated on this "reality" idea, even if it is fiction. On that note even most reality tv isn't "real". Most of the drama that ensues is pre-planned by producers to help bump ratings. I guess what I mean by this post is: take what you watch for what it is...entertainment!
