Death of a Soap Opera

Sunday, September 30th, 2007, 10:31 am

That's what they should rename Days of Our Lives because it seems like TPTB want to kill it.

I've watched other soaps that have ended, but usually it seems like I stopped watching them before the ending was announced.  Then I tuned in just to see how it would end.  But with Days, I've been watching and can see why the show will probably end.  It's awful!  And the ratings and grumbling of the fans are testaments to this.

What happened to romance?  What happened to good storytelling?  Heroes and heroines to root for?  Love and adventure?  Fighting toward something and getting the satisfying payoff in the end?

Days has seemed to forget how to do this.  Such a shame from a soap that has given some of the most iconic Supercouples in soap history.  Bo & Hope.  John & Marlena.  Steve & Kayla.  Doug & Julie.  Shane & Kim.  Jack & Jen.  Sure, some characters and actors have moved on, forcing the show to go in a different direction, but the show still has 8 of these characters on canvas and the most exciting thing most of them have done recently is risk a paper cut reading love letters concerning the made up history of two characters we care nothing about.

Instead of focusing on good stories, the show has now filled itself with trying to force the audience to accept a rapist and his victim as a rootable couple.  Bringing on a younger set who I am guessing we are supposed to be more impressed by their looks rather than the story.  Thinking that a romance between a man and his niece is acceptable because he was adopted. Undecided

Maybe the genre of soaps are dying, but does Days have to make it such a painful process?
